Proctoscopy, also known as rigid sigmoidoscopy, is used to view the inside of the rectum and anus. In this procedure, a straight, hollow metal or plastic tube, sometimes with a tiny light, is used to examine the rectum. An instrument capable of taking tissue samples for biopsy can also be inserted through the hollow tube.
