Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them (motor neurons). The test records electrical activity of muscles during rest and contraction, helping to diagnose neuromuscular disorders. An EMG may be advised if you are experiencing symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness, or unexplained weakness in the arms or legs. By translating electrical signals into graphs, sounds, or numerical values, specialists can identify conditions affecting muscles, nerves, or the communication between them.
