Colonoscopy is an endoscopic procedure to view the inner lining of the large intestine (rectum and colon). It is performed using a 4 ft. long, finger-thick, flexible tube equipped with a small camera and light at its tip. This allows the doctor to closely examine the intestinal lining and detect abnormalities. If you are pregnant or have certain medical conditions such as diabetes, lung or heart disease, or allergies to specific medications, you must inform your doctor before undergoing the procedure.
